The Senate approved Friday, October 8, delaying the legal age of retirement from 60 to 62 years, a key measure of reform desired by Nicolas Sarkozy who is strongly opposed by unions and opposition.
Following a lengthy debate, the upper house of Parliament passed section 5 of the bill on pension reform by 186 votes against 153, unchanged from the version adopted by the National Assembly on September 10, making the final vote. The UMP, which does not hold only the majority in the Senate - unlike Assembly - and the majority of the elected centrists voted for. Groups of left-wing opposition Socialists, Communists and Greens voted against.
